Baldur's Gate 3 is filled with intricate side stories that span across multiple acts and test your decision-making skills. One of the most unique narratives involves a cursed piece of jewelry found deep within the Underdark. Unlocking the secrets of this item initiates the Help the Cursed Monk questline, which forces players to confront the spiritual burdens of a long-dead resident of the Sword Coast.

Finding the Sentient Amulet in Grymforge

To begin this spiritual journey, you must navigate the dangerous ruins of Grymforge during Act 1. The object is locked away inside an Adamantine Chest located near the lava pools where the Lava Elemental roams. You will need a high sleight of hand skill or the proper key to open the chest and retrieve the item securely.

Upon picking up the accessory, the spirit inhabiting it will make contact with your main character directly. The ghost belongs to a monk who was cursed with uncontrollable laughter, a condition that threatens to pass onto whoever holds the item. You must succeed in a series of initial wisdom saving throws to keep your composure and understand the spirit's final wish.

Tracking Down Shirra in Act 3

The restless spirit asks you to carry him to the city of Baldur's Gate so he can find his granddaughter, Shirra Clarwen. This means the quest will occupy your inventory space for a significant portion of the game until you reach Act 3. Keeping the item safe ensures you can eventually fulfill the monk's desire for spiritual peace.

Once you finally arrive at Rivington, you must visit the Open Hand Temple to search for Shirra. Speaking with the local investigators reveals that Shirra passed away some time ago and her body rests in the crypt below. Navigating down into the temple's lower chambers allows you to locate her sarcophagus and initiate the final ritual.

Resolving the Curse and Choosing the Outcome

Interacting with the tomb causes the monk's spirit to leave the jewelry and temporarily animate his granddaughter's corpse. He explains that the curse cannot simply vanish and must be transferred to a living host to grant him eternal rest. This leaves the player with a crucial choice regarding the fate of their own party members.

You can choose to accept the monk's curse, which requires passing two distinct wisdom checks to minimize the physical toll. Succeeding grants you a unique hideously hilarious action while failing reduces one of your core attributes permanently. Alternatively, refusing his request forces you to fight the animated corpses in the crypt to lay the spirit to rest forcefully.
